My Approach

My clinical training is in Humanistic Psychology.

In this school of thought, therapy is not about treating people as though they are broken, or viewing behaviors as unconscious or irrational.  Rather, humanistic psychology places value on each person’s free will and personal agency.  Humanistic psychology is optimistic and focuses on the virtuous human capacity to overcome hardship, pain and despair.  Humanistic Psychology emphasizes the inherent worth of each person, the importance of human values, and the creative, dynamic nature of human beings.

The goal of one-to-one psychotherapy is to help you

  • understand your past and future wants

  • process the emotional experiences of your life

  • become more self-aware and accepting of yourself

  • develop and improve effective coping mechanisms

  • resolve or mitigate troublesome behaviors, beliefs, compulsions, thoughts, or emotions

  • improve relationships and social skills

Talking to an impartial professional who listens to you brings emotional and mental relief. Our discussions during sessions will increase your self-understanding and give you insight. But this is not where the your story ends. A key part of the therapeutic process is taking actions in your life to change or restructure harmful and unhelpful thought processes into something more constructive and optimistic. Together, we will work to decide on actions you might take, and these will be assigned as homework tasks between sessions.

What women and adolescent girls say

Thanks to our work together, I have realized how to really take care of myself, what it means, what techniques I can use, what choices this means. I have become aware of how childhood traumas are playing out in my emotional life today and this awareness opened the door to a new, lighter, happier, me. I have learnt to work with myself instead of against myself.

When I started tele-therapy I was living in a box room in my apartment and looking for jobs as a waitress, having given up my job and rented out my bedroom. Within a couple of months of our work together, I was back on track: living alone (joyously!) and working on a wonderful (and high-level) project that allowed me to do work I enjoy most.

I was feeling flat and unsure about what to do 'next'. I was considering moving to another country for my partner's work and felt very unsure about the move. Kenden challenged me to be honest with myself. To be accountable to my own voice, the one I was trying to squish in order to remain in a space and relationship that was familiar.

I was extremely stressed, anxious and making decisions that seemed based in anxiety, having trouble working things out rationally on my own. After working with Kenden, my self assurance has increased, I’m no longer anxious about the future but really excited about it. I have learned I have agency to drive how things turn out and that I can personalize things like marriage to be my own. Plus, I think I have a method of dissecting feelings like this in the future.

I got a bit skeptical about doing tele-therapy initially; but the professionalism and resounding words of Kenden almost immediately convinced me.

I was struggling with a huge amount of self doubt, loss of confidence and lack of passion about what I wanted to do. In the first free assessment session, very quickly my thoughts were "this is going to work, this is going to be worth the investment". So in those first few sessions I felt like I could breathe again, that I was not alone, that I didn't have to struggle on my own. I felt hopeful.

I had lost a sense of purpose in my job and was finding myself in a toxic environment I just couldn't manage to extract myself from. For me the best part was to feel fully understood, not alone and to experience positive change thanks to many tools and exercises that we used. I have made huge, invaluable steps in my "being with myself" thanks to working with Kenden. So often I have had "epiphany" moments of realizations and new perspectives opening.

I remember thinking this was exactly what I wanted as we started to revisit my values and goals. I took my notes and my homework very seriously as the work I was doing with Kenden was my salvation. I also liked the action-oriented focus. I felt understood, supported, and accompanied.

I love that Kenden allows me to extend the thoughts that go around and around in my head into a safe space between us.

It's good to have someone who will enter into your experience with you, and see it objectively. The guidance is invaluable and the empathy very comforting.

This is such a great tool to better understand myself and to learn to rely on my own strengths. I immediately felt clearer on where I was, where I was going and what I wanted to get out of my experiences.

I felt confident about the work ahead and it always felt so supportive. I took my session notes very seriously, often coming back to it in between sessions.

I think what I like the most is Kenden’s ability to help me access what is really going on beyond the circumstances. The way we reformulate, elaborate and look differently at the experience so that I often have realizations that help me move forward, coupled with concrete actions to materialize it.

It's easy to get lost between idealism and pessimism. Kenden offered pragmatic suggestions.

I felt safe working with Kenden in an environment that is open and non-judgmental and where I know that the core issues that I am facing are understood. I don't have the same feelings of despair from time to time that I used to.
